Monday, April 30th, 2012 @ 10:04 Groups & Schools, News, Wild Borneo Expeditions

Downbelow's staff keeping a watchful eye on the snorkelers from Wild Borneo Expeditions' Dubai school group

Our friends from Wild Borneo Expeditions and their group recently spent the day with Downbelow again, snorkeling the beautiful coves and bays of Gaya Island.

The group, consisting of students from an international school in Dubai, was watched over by our instructor team, ensuring their safety at all times throughout the day.

“Thank you to Downbelow and the team for another great day,” said Wild Borneo Expeditions’ Mia Robinson, “as usual our group had an amazing time.”

Wild Borneo Expeditions regularly use Downbelow’s awesome facilities and services on Gaya island, 10 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, to facilitate snorkeling, diving and marine conservation education for their groups.

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 @ 11:45 IDC, News

Michelle assisting resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann on a recent PADI Open Water Course

Downbelow’s next IDC is now only a matter of weeks away and our Instructor Development Course candidates are honing their skills.

One of our Professional Interns, Michelle, grabbed a great opportunity over the weekend, when she had the rare opportunity to assist resident PADI Course Director Richard on an Open Water Course.

It’s not often that an intern gets the opportunity for first hand experience side-by-side with the resident CD.

Michelle’s close-up experience is sure to benefit her in the upcoming PADI IDC, but with Richard and his Go Pro Team always on stand-by, all our pro interns are in a great position to source from a variety of experiences.

For aspiring scuba instructors in Sabah, now is a great time to join us for Sabah’s next IDC as it gives you ample time for prep.

Divemaster Interns in Kota Kinabalu Do Deep Dive Scenario

Thursday, April 19th, 2012 @ 17:06 Divemaster, News

Downbelow's current batch of PADI Divemaster Interns in Kota Kinabalu, with PADI Course Director Richard far right

It’s been a while since our current batch of PADI Divemaster interns enjoyed some attention on the blog, what with all the groups we’ve had to focus on at the dive centre recently.

Now, seeing as how are in between waves of eager adventurers and divers occupying our beach house dive centre, focus shifts back to our hard-working interns.

Resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann took them out to deeper waters recently, to give them the opportunity to practice the Deep Dive Scenario, a vital skill component of the PADI Divemaster course.

While keeping a keen eye to ensure quality and requirements levels were obtained, the 3 divemaster interns illustrated their command of knowledge and skill to pull off a successful practice session.

Our divemaster candidates are nearing the big day, when they will be tested on their skills and knowledge and will hopefully qualify as fully fledged PADI Divemasters.

Glamorgan Uni Students in Gaya Island Beach Cleanup

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 @ 10:48 Glamorgan University, News, Project AWARE

University of Glamorgan, Wave 2, with the spoils of their beach cleanup effort

As is our practice, and a good tradition, all Downbelow’s group activities include an environmental awareness module, which is followed up with environmental cleanup action.

The second wave of University of Glamorgan students did not break with this tradition, and before they left our picturesque slice of paradise here in Gaya island, they participated in a Project AWARE Beach Cleanup.

Thanks to all our recent group activity, there was markedly less rubbish around.

Still, a large tire, which doesn’t float, yet somehow ends up on shores of the vehicle-free Gaya island, was collected, significantly adding to the total weight.

Our University of Glamorgan group has since returned to the UK and we look forward to when next they visit.

Danish Borneo Adventure Group Camps out on Gaya Island Dive Centre

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 @ 16:34 Danish Adventure Group, Groups & Schools, News

Another Danish group joining us during their Borneo Adventure with Downbelow

Another wave of Danish adventurers have hit the shores of our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya Island, for a week filled with sun, tropical jungle and diving.

The adventurers camp out at our beach house dive centre where they get to enjoy the beach and diving, which starts as close as our house reef, a giant stride from the jetty.

Learning to dive is the main focus of the week, so the adventurers will either learn how to dive, or they upgrade any diving qualifications they may already have.

Either way, under the watchful eye of resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann and his Go Pro team, the Danish adventure group will increase their skills and knowledge, as they are also exposed to Project AWARE’s Coral Reef and Shark Conservation modules.

The group will also give back to the environment when they participate in a Project AWARE Beach Clean Up to help remove whatever marine debris washes up on shore.

Check out what our Borneo Adventure can do for your group.

Video: Borneo Whale Shark in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012 @ 10:37 News, Sightings, Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, Whale Sharks

On Friday we had more whale shark action here in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah and one of our guests was lucky enough to have a camera at the ready.

Actually, Downbelow’s guests saw whale sharks on 3 separate occasions over the last weekend, so we are feeling very blessed to have such a busy whale shark season in Kota Kinabalu this year.

Anyway, our guests from Friday grabbed this footage of the whale shark spotted off the coast of Borneo, and we stitched it together for all to enjoy.

Although not guaranteed – it’s nature after all – to have a chance of diving with whale sharks in Sabah, you have to be in the water :)

So contact us and let’s go whale shark diving in Borneo!

Heavy Whale Shark Traffic in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

Monday, April 9th, 2012 @ 09:45 News, Sightings, Whale Sharks

Finally, Richard in a shot with a whale shark as captured by one of our whale shark watching guests

We’ve had a very exciting whale shark season in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo, with sightings every month so far this year.

PADI Course Director Richard Swann and many of the guests at Downbelow, have been supremely lucky to have had multiple whale shark encounters during dives in Kota Kinabalu’s TAR Park.

Richard has expanded his whale shark photography collection with some beautiful close-up shots of these gentle giants and our instructors have also gotten up close and personal with Sabah’s whale sharks.

If we were excited about monthly whale shark sightings in Borneo, then this weekend past was pure whale shark sighting ecstasy.

Since Friday, whale sharks have seemingly popped up left right and centre, with no less than 3 separate whale shark sightings right here in Kota Kinabalu’s TAR Park.

Our guest have gotten some unforgettable whale shark photos, one even featuring Richard, who more often than not is behind the the camera.

Now is a great time to get in the water with Downbelow for heightened chances of seeing whale sharks. What are you waiting for? Contact us now!

Guest Ashley Whitworth took this picture of another guests who encountered a whale shark during his Nitrox dive

We kicked off the weekend on Friday with this beautiful picture of our first weekend whale shark
