Cleaning the Beach in Malaysia After The Rain

Friday, September 27th, 2013 @ 15:53 Conservation, News

After a wet & windy start in the morning, the Downbelow crew were not deterred from our task of beach cleaning. We spread out making the most of the low tide & the exposed beach.

Small pieces of litter become buried in the sand so clearing the debris takes time however it is nice to know they are being disposed of correctly.

Well done to all the Downbelow team for caring enough to take part in our intense month long debris awareness/cleaning campaign.

Marine debris comes from various sources but ultimately it stems from us humans & our endless desire for plastic products & packaging.

Next time please consider, do you need that extra bag?

Borneo Adventures Continue with Mount Kinabalu Climb

Thursday, September 26th, 2013 @ 17:08 Borneo Adventure, News

Congratulations to our young European adventurers who have just completed their PADI Open Water Course at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre. They also stayed on the island for a week and supported our daily beach clean-up by assisting our island crew every morning they were there.

Their adventure continues as they are about to take on the mighty Mount Kinabalu. Mt Kinabalu is the highest in Malaysia and the Roof of Borneo. It’s the undisputed jewel in the crown of Kinabalu National Park, a protected area spanning 753.7 km2 and Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site designated by UNESCO in December 2000.

They came to Downbelow’s KK office for a briefing by Marketing Director Joanne Swann yesterday and on everyone’s face was a look of excitement and nerves.

Well it won’t be an adventure if it’s not challenging right?

All the best everyone!

Downbelow Team & Guests Clean The Beaches in Malaysia

Thursday, September 26th, 2013 @ 16:09 Conservation, News

Our awesome cleanup crew which this month are made up by the whole Downbelow island team were joined by a few guests who are also passionate about conservation and support clearing marine debris from our shoreline.

Yesterday we focused on the rocky areas in front of the dive centre where floating litter becomes easily trapped.

Some of our team clean everyday of the year but this month we are supporting the Project AWARE Foundation & marine debris awareness month by putting in some extra effort… what about you?

Many Kilos of Trash Removed but the Clean-up Continues in Borneo

Thursday, September 26th, 2013 @ 10:07 Conservation, News

The Downbelow crew are still going strong with our daily morning cleanups but sadly we no longer have the assistance of our Danish adventurers as they have completed their dive courses so it is down to the Downbelow team to continue the good cause.

We are happy to say that great progress has been made with many kilogrammes of trash removed from the island so far.

Please support us by reducing your plastic usage & wastage, if it is not used it will not need to be disposed of, if you buy just a few items in a shop you are given a plastic bag, tell the shop that you don’t need it and suggest that they do not hand out bags for small items, encourage your local stores to sell recyclable bags.

Everyone can make a difference!
