Our resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann oversaw the group and captured a few video clips along the way.

Below are those clips, neatly packaged, for you to enjoy.

While you’re at it, do subscribe to our YouTube channel  - Richard is quite active with that video recorder of his, and we’re posting new clips quite often.

Polytechnic Sandakan Students Discover Scuba Diving

Friday, October 28th, 2011 @ 10:00 Groups & Schools, News

Gaya Island, Kota Kinabalu: This week we hosted 27 students from the Polytechnic Sandakan who visited Downbelow on Gaya Island.

Our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre was part of their visit to Kota Kinabalu, which is to gain experience for the Tourism Management Diploma that they all are studying towards.

The energetic and fun-loving group participated in our PADI Discover Scuba Diving and AWARE Coral Reef Conservation programs.

None of the group had ever dived before and with much of Sabah’s treasures being ocean deep, it was a wonderful opportunity for them to experience their first time underwater.

The two programs combined presented the opportunity for them to learn and discover first hand why so many dive tourists choose Sabah and Malaysia as their diving destination of choice.

They also learned about Sabah’s diverse sea life and underwater wonders and the important role that reefs play in the sustainability of continuing to attract underwater tourists.

The overt message to these future leaders of the tourism industry is to protect our oceans.

The Polytechnic Sandakan was a pleasure to host and word from our island crew is that it’s been a while since they’ve had so much fun on the island.

The Danes arrive on Gaya Island and Richard heartily greets them to their home for the next weekLast Friday our Danish Adventure group arrived at the Downbelow PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya Island, Kota Kinabalu.

The adventurous Danes, all 22 of them, have spent the last week here on the island with us, where they learned to dive and, undoubtedly, appreciate nature.

Last week, Downbelow’s island staff erected their accommodations to which Richard welcomed them. An oversized tent, their comfortable hammocks will put them as close to nature as you can get whilst still sleeping in a bed.

They depart from the island tomorrow, brandishing their PADI Open Water Diver certificates as proof of their underwater achievements.

Their adventure doesn’t stop there however, because they’re head for Kinabalu Park where they will take on their next challenge; the mighty Mt. Kinabalu.

The Danes are Back for A Month of Sabah Adventure

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 @ 10:00 Danish Adventure Group, News

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: Earlier this year we hosted a group of Danish Adventurers who visited Sabah to explore her treasures from oceans deep to mountains high.

The second wave of Danish Adventurers having just completed the Salt TrailsSeptember saw the arrival of another group for more of the same.

The previous group of 10 Danes had a blast on their Sabah leg of multi-country adventure, and the numbers have swelled to a total across the two group of 22 participants.

As part of their itinerary they take on the Salt Trails.  It’s a 4 day journey winding along the ridges of the Crocker Range Mountains from Kampong Inobong not far from Kota Kinabalu, to the end of the trail near Tambunan, 35 km away.

Their adventure also includes living on Gaya Island for a week at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre where they will learn how to dive and qualify as PADI Open Water Scuba Divers.

Mt. Kinabalu looms large on their list of things to do. Malaysia’s highest peak towers 4,095m above Sabah and it’s up to the ddventurous Danes to summit her peak during a 2 day journey, which involves a 16km hike taking them through 2,000m of elevation.

Rounding off their itinerary is a plethora of Borneo wildlife.

The DK Adventure Group before taking on Sabah's river rapids on the Padas RiverThey will travel to Sandakan where the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sepilok awaits, before embarking on wildlife safaris on and around the Kinabatangan River to try and spot orang utans, proboscis monkeys, crocodiles and even pigmy elephants in the wild.

The Gomantong Caves, one of the world’s largest sources of bird nests used in Bird Nest Soup, is also part of the visit to Sandakan.

Through their busy schedule, the Danes will have ample leisure time during which to explore the culture and food of which Sabah has so much to offer, leaving them with thorough experience and deep impression of this land below the wind.

Keep an eye on the blog for updates, or see the highlights on our Facebook page in the Facebook album.
