Our Borneo Adventure group spent their last day on the island yesterday.

While resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann took the advanced students through their final knowledge reviews and dives, the rest of the group took the opportunity to sun themselves on the tranquil shores of our beach house dive centre.

In the afternoon, as the clouds moved in over Gaya island, the group moved out to spend 1 night on the Kota Kinabalu mainland.

Today they head to Downbelow’s HQ in KK Times Square where they will be briefed before taking on their next adventure: Sabah’s Salt Trails.

Over the next 5 days the adventurers will be trekking the jungle paths that are the Salt Trails, winding along the ridges of the Crocker Range mountains.

They will encounter dense tropical jungle, isolated village settlements, all sorts of weather conditions, a variety of bugs and yes, leeches.

All part of the Borneo Adventure, which of course, will be documented right on this blog.

AWARE Reef & Shark Conservation for Borneo Adventure Group

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 @ 11:26 Borneo Adventure, Groups & Schools, News

Go Pro Instructor Paul telling the group about why sharks need their help

Environmental awareness is just one of the ways we give back to the environment here at Downbelow, which is why we have awareness modules in all our group programs.

Our latest Borneo Adventure group, who is currently on Gaya island learning to dive with us, got better acquainted with the environment when resident PADI Course Director Richard conducted the AWARE Coral Reef Conservation course for them.

The Coral Reef Conservation Course is all about coral reefs, why we should protect them and how they are endangered.

Coral reef conservation knowledge forms an essential part of especially divers’ knowledge, as apart from being our playground, coral reefs play an important part in the the health of the ocean’s ecosystem.

Intern-turned-Downbelow-pro-staff Paul was also on hand to introduce the group to the plight of sharks, and collected all their signatures for the Give Sharks a Chance Petition, which is used to help compel governments to enforce shark saving legislation.

All in all the ocean was winning today with education spread that is sure to make a positive impact on the marine environment.

Open Water Course for European Adventure Group’s Borneo Adventure

Monday, May 7th, 2012 @ 10:38 Groups & Schools, News

European adventure group on their Borneo Adventure

Our latest adventure group has settled down in their jungle camp on Gaya Island here in Kota Kinabalu, while they busy themselves with the first leg of their Borneo Adventure.

While spending time at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya island, the adventure group will learn how to dive.

The first timers will be taking part in our popular PADI Open Water Scuba Diver course and will earn themselves a fully fledge PADI Open Water certification.

The few who are already qualified, will go on to take Advanced Open Water and speciality courses to increase their diving skills.

In the meantime they are enjoying their time on this island in the Downbelow Jungle Camp. We erect the temporary accommodations for our adventure groups to give them a taste of a round-the-clock tropical setting… and perhaps a soft introduction to what’s to come.

During their 1 month with us, the adventure group will also spend 5 days jungle trekking the Borneo rainforest. Other activities include cultural experiences, climbing Mt. Kinabalu, white water rafting and wildlife safaris.

Next Borneo Adventure Group Arrives at Gaya Island

Friday, May 4th, 2012 @ 16:41 Borneo Adventure, News

The next group of eager adventurers on Downbelow's Borneo Adventure

Downbelow’s PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya island in Kota Kinabalu is once again humming with excitement as we get invaded by the next group of adventurers keen on exploring Sabah through our Borneo Adventure.

In fact, so eager was the group of 19 to kick-off their adventure, that they arrived at the island early.

We were ready.

Immediately the adventurers took advantage of the gorgeous Kota Kinabalu day and headed straight for the ocean. Under the close watch of our trained instructors they snorkeled the clear waters of the Tunku Abdul Rahman park and got a taste of what was to come.

During the first week of the Borneo Adventure, participants learn how to dive. Those already qualified to dive get to further their qualifications with an advanced or speciality qualification.

During their month on Downbelow’s Borneo Adventure, the group will also be jungle trekking Sabah’s rainforest, conquer Mt. Kinabalu, whitewater raft the Padas River and go on a culture and wildlife safari when they visit Sabah’s east coast.

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 @ 11:15 Groups & Schools, News

The group from Hong Kong who joined Downbelow for some Discover Scuba Diving action

We hosted a group of enthusiastic participants from Hong Kong at the Gaya island beach house recently, who joined us for Discover Scuba Diving in Sabah, Borneo.

It was serendipitous for one of our new IDC interns Kenji, who got the perfect opportunity to assist during the group’s program.

Everyone had a great time as the Hong Kong group worked through the DSD, which was followed by 2 open water dives.

All the while, of course, under the close supervision of Downbelow’s professional instructor staff to ensure safety at all times.

Downbelow's staff keeping a watchful eye on the snorkelers from Wild Borneo Expeditions' Dubai school group

Our friends from Wild Borneo Expeditions and their group recently spent the day with Downbelow again, snorkeling the beautiful coves and bays of Gaya Island.

The group, consisting of students from an international school in Dubai, was watched over by our instructor team, ensuring their safety at all times throughout the day.

“Thank you to Downbelow and the team for another great day,” said Wild Borneo Expeditions’ Mia Robinson, “as usual our group had an amazing time.”

Wild Borneo Expeditions regularly use Downbelow’s awesome facilities and services on Gaya island, 10 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, to facilitate snorkeling, diving and marine conservation education for their groups.

Glamorgan Uni Students in Gaya Island Beach Cleanup

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 @ 10:48 Glamorgan University, News, Project AWARE

University of Glamorgan, Wave 2, with the spoils of their beach cleanup effort

As is our practice, and a good tradition, all Downbelow’s group activities include an environmental awareness module, which is followed up with environmental cleanup action.

The second wave of University of Glamorgan students did not break with this tradition, and before they left our picturesque slice of paradise here in Gaya island, they participated in a Project AWARE Beach Cleanup.

Thanks to all our recent group activity, there was markedly less rubbish around.

Still, a large tire, which doesn’t float, yet somehow ends up on shores of the vehicle-free Gaya island, was collected, significantly adding to the total weight.

Our University of Glamorgan group has since returned to the UK and we look forward to when next they visit.

Danish Borneo Adventure Group Camps out on Gaya Island Dive Centre

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012 @ 16:34 Danish Adventure Group, Groups & Schools, News

Another Danish group joining us during their Borneo Adventure with Downbelow

Another wave of Danish adventurers have hit the shores of our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya Island, for a week filled with sun, tropical jungle and diving.

The adventurers camp out at our beach house dive centre where they get to enjoy the beach and diving, which starts as close as our house reef, a giant stride from the jetty.

Learning to dive is the main focus of the week, so the adventurers will either learn how to dive, or they upgrade any diving qualifications they may already have.

Either way, under the watchful eye of resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann and his Go Pro team, the Danish adventure group will increase their skills and knowledge, as they are also exposed to Project AWARE’s Coral Reef and Shark Conservation modules.

The group will also give back to the environment when they participate in a Project AWARE Beach Clean Up to help remove whatever marine debris washes up on shore.

Check out what our Borneo Adventure can do for your group.

University of Glamorgan Students Group 2 in Sabah, Borneo

Thursday, April 5th, 2012 @ 11:52 Glamorgan University, Groups & Schools, News

Group 2 of University of Glamorgan Students at their jungle camp in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo

The second group of the students from the University of Glamorgan has arrived and made themselves at home at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on Gaya island here in Kota Kinabalu.

For 8 nights, the students are temporary residents of Gaya island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, 10 minutes from the capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu.

They will spend their days recording data about the coral reefs and sea-grass beds near our dive centre as part of a Marine Ecology course module.

Our Kota Kinabalu dive centre is uniquely positioned to offer a exciting environment for university groups, as well as private and corporate groups looking for fun, adventure and team-building.

The University of Glamorgan students are particularly chuffed with their jungle camp, pitched on the open patch of grass next to our dive centre, surrounded by tropical jungle.

Wildlife Galore on Danish Group’s Borneo Adventure

Friday, March 30th, 2012 @ 11:33 Danish Adventure Group, Groups & Schools, News

Up-close and personal with a juvenile Borneo pigmy elephant in the Kinabatangan River

Our second group of adventurous Danes just returned to Kota Kinabalu after the east-coast Sabah leg of their Borneo Adventure with Downebelow.

The east-coast of Sabah is where the Borneo Adventure takes participants to experience Sabah’s wildlife, pure and unadulterated like nature intended.

Such is wildlife though, that sometimes you see a lot, and sometimes you don’t. Luck was on this group’s side though, as they saw pretty much all the wildlife the Kinabatangan River has to offer.

Not only did they see orang utan, proboscis monkeys and river crocodiles fairly up close, but they had multiple encounters with the shy Borneo pigmy elephant.

Once encounter in particular was quite exciting.

“We suddenly saw an elephant in the river”, recounted an excited Abby, Downbelow’s staff who accompanied the group, “so close, that I had to sit back to take pictures.”

They also encountered a small heard, as well as two elephants protecting an elephant calf, the highlight of their river cruises.

Downbelow frequently hosts groups to experience Sabah’s wildlife both below the ocean’s surface and in the Borneo jungles.
