Instructor Development Course Candidates Benefit from Internship

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 @ 11:37 IDC, News, Professional Diving Internships

The 6 IDC candidates with resident PADI Course Director Richard and IDC Staff Instructor James in the back.

The benefit of the hands-on experience to be gained during an internship just can’t be over-stated, as our May PADI IDC candidates are finding out.

Even though our next IDC only starts on 16 May, all 6 our currently enrolled IDC candidates are already at our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre on internships, to gain as much experience as possible (and we still have space, join this next IDC).

Aside from getting hands-on experience by assisting our full time instructors when they conduct open water courses for the group members, our candidates also have the unique opportunity to learn from each other.

During their IDC prep earlier this week, they had to work through mock exam questions.

The Instructor Development Course candidates, all of who are experienced divers, worked through the questions they knew well, and marked the questions about which they had doubts.

Afterwards they engaged in group discussions, giving the opportunity to present their answers to each other, as they would have to do to examiners during the Instructor Exam.

Resident PADI Course Director and IDC Staff Instructor James were always nearby to clarify whatever questions or doubts remained.

There are 2 more weeks to go before the next IDC and lots of opportunity for our candidates to hone their skills and knowledge.

Michelle assisting resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann on a recent PADI Open Water Course

Downbelow’s next IDC is now only a matter of weeks away and our Instructor Development Course candidates are honing their skills.

One of our Professional Interns, Michelle, grabbed a great opportunity over the weekend, when she had the rare opportunity to assist resident PADI Course Director Richard on an Open Water Course.

It’s not often that an intern gets the opportunity for first hand experience side-by-side with the resident CD.

Michelle’s close-up experience is sure to benefit her in the upcoming PADI IDC, but with Richard and his Go Pro Team always on stand-by, all our pro interns are in a great position to source from a variety of experiences.

For aspiring scuba instructors in Sabah, now is a great time to join us for Sabah’s next IDC as it gives you ample time for prep.

Scuba Girls Rule the Pro Internship in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012 @ 14:42 IDC, News, Professional Diving Internships

Liz, Sara and Michelle, Scuba Girls, plus Carl, Scuba Cat

Ever so briefly it seemed as if the Girl Power on our pro internship was going to wane, following Leanne’s departure this week, but then – stage right – Michelle.

Michelle joins us anew, keeping Downbelow’s scuba girls strong, and keeping our current international internship an all female affair.

Actually Sabahan, Michelle technically qualifies for our local internship program, which transforms local talent into professional divemasters and instructors over the course of a year.

But Michelle has a goal that needs to be met much sooner than that. The world, she says, awaits, and as soon as this scuba girl is qualified, she’s heading overseas to live the diving dream.

In the meantime, the Sisters in Scuba are gaining lots of experience while working towards the Instructor Development Course in May.

The boys on the island have been oddly quiet…

Instructor Development Course class of February 2012 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia

Our February PADI Instructor Development Course wrapped up here in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah when our candidates successfully completed the PADI Instructor Examination.

“The February IDC has been one of the best ever,” recalled resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann, “with a great group of candidates from all over the world.”

“We also had whale sharks during the course for everyone to see,” he said with a glint in his eye, fondly remembering the awesome whale shark photos he got of these gentle giants who couldn’t have made a more dramatic appearance in the waters of Kota Kinabalu’s TAR Park.

Our IDC candidates turned PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor have mostly completed their work here in Sabah, Borneo, although some will stay around longer yet to gain more experience teaching and diving during the tail end of their professional internships.

IDC Candidates Start Instructor Exam Dry Run

Instructor Development Course candidates sit for a Instructor Exam dry run

The PADI Instructor Examination starts tomorrow and it’s all hands on deck for our Instructor Development Course candidates.

They’ve been doing PADI IE dry run exams to expose the areas and skills, which require a wee bit more polish before the big test starts tomorrow.

Resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann and his Go Pro Team have been taking good care of the IDC candidates though, and the dry runs should give them the confidence they need to ace their exams.

We wish our candidates all the best and know that they will put the icing on the cake of what was possibly the best IDC ever.

Intern Sam Joins an Open Water Course for IDC Experience

Thursday, January 26th, 2012 @ 09:28 Courses, IDC, News

Intern Sam with a junior guest flanked by Instructor Wellson

Downbelow’s Instructor Wellson recently conducted a Junior Open Water Course for one of our younger guests.

Professional diving intern Sam got onboard to shadow the course and gain experience, which will be a valuable addition to her upcoming IDC.

THe Instructor Development Course, which takes place early next month, is Sam’s ticket to the professional world of scuba diving and will develop her skills to a level fit for a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

The PADI Instructor Exam that immediately follows the IDC will ultimately determine Sam’s fate, but with Downbelow’s resident Course Director Richard Swann and his Go Pro Team having a 100% success rate, the future looks bright.
