Visitors to the
region of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai are no longer
permitted to stay overnight on the Island of Sipadan.
Resorts were made to leave the island by January 2005.

When considering a trip bear in mind that to get the best out of this area you'll want to be as close to the best dive spots as possible, its not out of the ordinary to do 4 and 5 dives a day but you can't do this if you have to spend half your day on a boat getting to and from the sites from Semporna.
Mabul is the most populated of local islands with threefull service dive resorts, Borneo Divers, SMART and Sipadan Water Village, plus two lower budget options, Seaventures and Uncle Chang, all located on or just offshore the island.

We often have people ask us "Which resort will show us the best dive sites" - they all have access to the same sites so this really depends on the ability of your dive guide and boatman. From our experience, the difference between resorts is professionalism, variety of food, standard of accommodation, condition of dive rental equipment and level of guiding, plus the level of detrimental impact the resort has on the surrounding environment.
With respect to these differences you get what you pay for.

Sipadan - Kapalai Dive Resort
We have stayed at many resorts in the area and without doubt our first choice of residence is Kapalai. Once a vegetated Island, now a sandbank on Litigan Reefs and home to the stilt village of Sipadan - Kapalai Dive Resort.
Comprising 40 wooden chalets, double, twin and triple sharing, ensuite bathrooms with a shower and bathtub, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, you really do get a lot for your money, this is true style at a very affordable price.

excellent Snorkel
Reminiscent of the Maldives, the accommodation huts are build over the water with shutter doors opening to reveal breathtaking ocean views. The soothing sound of the water laps beneath you and reflections dance across the high ceilings.
There are no sand-flies or mosquitoes, no need for air conditioning, fresh bathing water is shipped from the mainland and rubbish is disposed of correctly.

The resort is perfectly located to get the most from your diving, with world class macro sites just a giant stride from the dive station, Sipadan Island a 20 minute speedboat ride away and Mabul about 10 minutes by speedboat, its possible to complete 4 or 5 dives a day if you wish.
Having said this non -divers are also fully catered for, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and soaking up the sun are equally pleasurable pastimes for those not wishing to dive.
