North Borneo Railway is back on track

Monday, October 24th, 2011 @ 17:08 News, Promotions

Sabah, Borneo: The North Borneo Railway has a rich history that dates back to the late 1800′s.

The North Borneo Railway Steam LocomotiveIt is therefore little wonder that prior to 2007, when the railway was shut down for extensive rehabilitation of the entire railway system, the North Borneo Railway enjoyed a loyal following of history buffs, locomotive enthusiasts, railfans and trainspotters.

The service interruption was originally going to be only 10 to 12 months, but after a more thorough inspection, it was discovered that the rails and bridges needed much more attention.

In the end, the North Borneo Railway was out of service for 3 years.

Well, now trainspotters can triumph, railfans can rally and hooray for history buffs, because Sabah’s one and only, famous British Vulcan steam locomotive is powering the North Borneo Railway strong as ever.

Twice a week, the historic train plies the railway line – still the only one in Borneo – between Tanjung Aru Station in Kota Kinabalu and Papar some 38km away.

The journey takes you out of the city along Sabah’s rural byways through villages, mangrove swamps and rice fields, whilst you enjoy the historic setting in the carriages renovated to look as they did in the early 1900′s.

Learn more about the the North Borneo Railway on our Sabah Day Trips page and book your journey aboard Sabah’s railway heritage.

The North Borneo Railway journeys to Papar on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Our North Borneo Railway page has more information, and you can book your journey by emailing us.

Project AWARE Shark Conservation Speciality Course Now On

Monday, October 10th, 2011 @ 16:35 News, Project AWARE, Promotions

We’ve always been for sharks, but very recent developments has enabled Downbelow to raise the bar when it comes to shark conservation awareness…

Project AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Speciality Course Instructor Trainer Richard and his first students, Steve and JosephOver the weekend, Downbelow’s resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann became PADI’s 1st member to qualify as an Instructor plus Instructor Trainer for Project AWARE’s new Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Speciality.

The fact that Richard has been involved in studying sharks for more than a year with detail documentation, plus his study of oceanography combined with his life in the ocean, contributed to him meeting the criteria to qualify as Instructor and Instructor Trainer in this distinctive speciality

Time is not on the side of sharks, so Richard wasted none and immediately got on with spreading the word.

Our PADI Divemaster Interns Steve and Joseph were first to be taught by Project AWARE first Shark Conservation Speciality Instructor.

They completed the course and in doing so claimed a 1st for themselves: the first divers to be qualified in this distinctive speciality.

I think we heard sharks cheering.

One of the shark pictures that Richard took recently of our local black tip communityHaving a resident community of black tip reef sharks only a few minutes by boat away from our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre, the Shark Conservation Speciality is of particular interest to Richard.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, the marine park – just 10 minutes from Kota Kinabalu – in which our PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre is located, is a haven for all sorts of unexpected creatures.

A community of black tip reef sharks just a few minutes by boat away from our dive centre counts amongst them.

Richard has been swimming with these sharks since 2007 and reckons he’s seen about 25 individuals.

Over the last year or so he has made more of a detailed study of these magnificent creatures and now has documented evidence of 15 distinct individuals. The picture of the shark accompanying this post was taken by Richard right here in the TAR park.

To celebrate sharks and prepare you for the Big Shark Shout Out Week taking place from 15 – 23 October, Downbelow is offering the Project AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Speciality Course at a special rate.

Divers doing a day of diving with Downbelow can now add the Shark Conservation Speciality to their day, adding just the qualifying fee, which is only RM180 extra per person.

Participants will receive all the learning materials, and 2 of your dives will then be where we normally spot our resident community of black tip reef sharks.

Nature being nature – unpredictable and all – we can’t guarantee a sighting, but you can still achieve the rating with or without a shark sighting.

Email us now to sign up for the Project AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Speciality Course and get ready to enjoy Big Shark Shout Out Week!

Take the Master SCUBA Diver Challenge!

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 @ 09:00 Courses, Diving Borneo, News, Promotions

By becoming a PADI Master SCUBA Diver you will be in a class of distinction; the best of the best in recreational diving!

The PADI Master SCUBA Diver is a direct application to PADI through Downbelow and not a course in itself. Rather it’s a prestigious rating to indicate that you’ve acquired significant experience and training in a variety of SCUBA environments.

In the PADI system of diver education, the PADI Master SCUBA Diver rating is the highest non-professional level you can reach.

Learn how to capture your magical moments underwater with Downbelow's Digital Underwater Photography course

How Does It Work?

Depending on what diver qualification and how many dives you have already completed, it could take as little as 1 day.

Alternatively, participants can join us for 1 month internship to complete all the required training.

The number of specialities you will be taking will also determine the price of the course.

The Master Scuba Diver Challenge

Because we will tailor the course to your particular diving interests and abilities, the Master SCUBA Diver Challenge can be taken at any point during your diving education.

This makes it fun and rewarding, enabling you to achieve the rating easier.

A PADI Rescue Diver qualification, 5 speciality ratings and at least 50 logged dives are required for the Master SCUBA Diver rating.

To choose the specialities which interest you, simply refer to our PADI Speciality Course page. If one of your chosen specialities were done during your PADI Advanced Course, you can reduce time and costs by getting credit for it.

We are currently giving the Master SCUBA Diver application fee for FREE – but for a limited time only!

Get in touch with us, and tell us what your current diver level is, how many dives you’ve logged, the time available to you to complete the course and what type of accommodation you prefer.

We will put together a fantastic quotation for you!
