Our PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) candidates had a nice surprise when they spotted the rarely seen Ghostpipe Fish right under the jetty outside our beach house.
At first our resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann took a photo from the jetty using his iPhone, even though the fish was visible in the photo he couldn’t resist to go in the waters and take a closer shot.
It was beautiful and worth the trouble!
During last years IDC our candidates went diving with Whalesharks just off our jetty, previous to that the candidates spotted Blacktip Reef sharks during one of their training dives. Seeing this Ghostpipe Fish is nonetheless special too and a good omen for the current PADI IDC candidates.
Nature always has something special in store for our PADI IDC candidates.
The official PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) Borneo is in progress!
Resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann has started with the orientation & officially welcomes Nadine, Nordin, Stefan, Sam & our own Downbelow staff member Pablo to the program. We also have Jonny & Rene taking their PADI IDC Staff Instructor courses.
One of the wonderful things about the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is the global variety of nationalities taking part. For this month, we have candidates from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Germany and our very own Malaysia.
We wish you all the best of success from the Downbelow Go-Pro Instructor Development team and all our staff.
Obviously you cannot join the current PADI IDC but there is always the next one! Contact us for details on how you can join the next PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia in May !
Our boat captain Mel wasted no time in putting his new dive skills to use after successfully becoming a PADI Divemaster a few days ago.
Over the weekend he used his newly acquired skills as a PADI Divemaster by conducting the PADI Scuba Review & Refresher Program with Downbelow’s guest Laura.

The management team from Downbelow always encourage their staff to improve themselves and also to take advantage of having PADI professionals as their colleagues to improve their diving skills.
Our latest staff member who took this advice and took a step up the ladder in his diving carear is our Captain Mel who is now a certified PADI Divemaster.
His instructor and mentor, resident PADI Course Director Richard Swann said he put in a lot of work, so he should be proud of his achievement.
He is not resting on his laurels though, now he is aiming to join the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) in May 2013.

It was a happy day for the Downbelow family as three of the guys from the HQ office joined the island crew for a day of diving.
Jeffrey (Marketing & I.T. Executive), Rudy (Senior Tour Bus Driver) and Irfan (Admin Assistant) were introduced to the world of scuba diving through the PADI Discover Scuba Diving programme, a course which is aimed at those who have never dived before.
Richard Swann (resident PADI Course Director and Downbelow’s Managing Director) then assigned Captain Mel, who is currently completing his PADI Divemaster course, to conduct the day’s programme under the supervision of Liz (PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer).
By the end of day the guys completed three dives, with the last dive at Sapi Shore where they got to see majestic marine creatures just a few minutes boat ride away from their office!
Now the guys from the head office understand why the crew at the island always have a big wide smile on their face, their “office” is a tropical paradise!
Are you interested to see our heavenly island-based office? Then dive with us!
Never dived before? Don’t worry, PADI’s Discover Scuba Diving program will give you the experience of a lifetime!

Downbelow said farewell to our latest university group from the USA.
The budding biologists studying for their degrees at the La Vern University, California have spent the last couple of weeks in Sabah taking in the sights and sounds of one of the most diverse tropical regions on the planet.
The group led by Jeffery Burkhart (PhD) enjoyed a few days with the crew at Downbelow’s PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre where they were shown the best the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park can offer.
The highlight of their time in the island was the sighting of a school of Blacktip Reef Sharks in the open water – yes we have sharks here in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
All participants were taken good care of by the Downbelow crew and obviously everyone had a ball.
Thank you Professor Jeff and the rest of the gang, we wish you a safe journey home and we are looking forward to your next visit.
Two of our local PADI Divemaster interns along with our boat captain recently completed their PADI Advanced Open Water Course with Downbelow.
So congratulations to Morin, Suhaimi and Along (boat captain) for a job well done. Also a pat on the back to their qualifying instructor, Liz who is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
Their next course is one of the most important ones, PADI Rescue Diver! This is where a diver will look beyond themselves and consider the safety of other divers.
