Local Intern Learning The Importance of Conservation

Monday, December 30th, 2013 @ 09:26 Conservation, News

Roland Baxter cleaning up

At Downbelow we stress to the team that the responsibility of taking care of the environment is in everyone’s hands. Every member of staff is encouraged to be proactive in our commitment to conservation instead of hoping someone else will clean up the environment surrounding us.

Our new local intern Roland Baxter Bruno Sylvester is busy learning the importance of keeping our oceans & beaches clean as he joins the company cleaning the shore around our jetty every morning.

Roland is here on a 12-month “Work for a Career” program with Downbelow where he will be a qualified PADI Divemaster professional by the end of the program. We are proud to offer scuba diving as a career option to Sabahans who dream the diving dream.

Roland will soon learn that the Downbelow team spend many hours daily cleaning other peoples debris from the beaches in our area. The good news is that you too can help by reducing your plastic usage and disposing your rubbish responsibly!

Monday, December 30th, 2013 @ 09:08 News

Christmas feast in Borneo

It was a hearty and delicious merry Christmas for the Downbelow Island team as they all enjoyed a couple of Turkeys cooked by PADI Platinum Course Director Richard Swann.

It took Richard 5 hours to prepare and cook the turkeys but all the food was gone within 1 minute 45 seconds! They probably have been waiting for this feast for days after seeing the Office team had theirs couple of weeks ago.

Anyway Merry Christmas everyone!

PADI Advanced Open Water Borneo

Downbelow dive instructor Victorley aka Big Vic is pleased to congratulate his student Chung for completing the PADI Advanced Open Water course with Downbelow.

The Advanced Open Water course is a natural progression from the PADI Open Water course and offers new experiences, new skills and lots of diving all under the direct supervision of your instructor, you don’t have to “feel” at an advanced level to embark on this new level of diving.

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah provides an ideal venue for the course, with wreck, reefs and lots of critters to explore.

Assisting Big Vic is Danielle, who is on her professional internship with Downbelow where she is currently completing the PADI Divemaster program and later on, for the PADI Instructor Development Course early 2014.

She is getting valuable experience as she witnesses how in real life a PADI Instructor will teach the PADI System of diver education.

Good job everyone!

The PADI Divemaster equipment exchange is great training for Go PRO divers problem-solving skills!

Friday, December 20th, 2013 @ 14:56 News, Professional Diving Internships

Today, our Go PRO interns are continuing their Go PRO career path, and are geared up for an equipment exchange.

This is a very important task in the PADI Divemaster course because candidates will be assessed on the use of their sound judgement to solve any unusual problems underwater.

In confined water, Daniel and Danielle must begin the exchange with a comfortable pattern of buddy breathing on a single regulator. When ready, they will begin exchanging all their equipment, with the exception of their weight belt and exposure suit.

As they carry out exchanging their masks, fins and BCD they may come across problems. The points scored are based on the assessment of their problem-solving skills.

The equipment exchange component of the PADI Divemaster is unique training for candidates to use their sound judgement, which they will exercise throughout their professional scuba diving career; and any scuba diving professional will affirm they have experienced unusual problems during their career, however due to their training and preparation they were able to safely overcome them.

Daniel and Danielle will find their experience of the equipment exchange very useful when it comes to assisting and supervising student divers’ during dive activities. As their PADI Divemaster course progresses they will be acting as a certified assistant on as many PADI courses. Their level of control and supervision will definitely improve with time and experience. Our premium PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre is always busy and so there will be plenty of chances for them to build on their skills.

To be a PADI Divemaster or PADI Instructor calls for a lot of responsibility, but it’s the most exciting job you might ever have!

Want to be a PADI Divemaster like our Go PRO interns Daniel and Danielle? Contact us at Downbelow, where our friendly team will provide more information on our different internship programs!
